Description
Diagnosis and Child-Centered Play Therapy
Child-Centered Play Therapy is grounded in principles that honor each child’s strengths, intrinsic striving towards growth, and holistic experience including thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CCPT therapists face a dilemma of balancing these principles with the realities of our current mental health system, as the practice of diagnosis is used by most medical professionals and required by insurance companies. Â
This workshop explores how CCPT therapists can use the practice of diagnosis in an ethical manner as needed to enable services for children. Participants will learn how CCPT addresses concerns often associated with particular diagnostic labels (e.g., ADHD, ASD, ODD, PTSD, etc.) and how to communicate with caregivers regarding diagnoses and subsequent treatment planning.Â
Objectives:
- Participants will learn the relationship between diagnosis and theoretical principles of Child-Centered Play Therapy.Â
- Participants will be able to identify ways Child-Centered Play Therapy builds strengths and addresses concerns typically associated with various diagnoses.Â
- Participants will be able to describe best practices for rendering diagnoses when working with children.Â
- Participants will learn how to communicate with caregivers and stakeholders regarding diagnoses and subsequent treatment planning.Â
